Authorities Identifies Grand Blanc Church Shooter as 40-Year-Old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) meetinghouse in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, during Sunday services.

Authorities have described the attack as “targeted violence”, and the FBI is leading the federal investigation. Police have also begun searching Sanford’s residence, examining his phone records, and working to piece together motive.

Local authorities say the gunman, later identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from nearby Burton, Michigan, drove his pickup truck into the front doors of the church just before 10:25 a.m. He then exited the vehicle and opened fire on worshippers inside, and is believed to have set parts of the church ablaze using gasoline or accelerants.

First responders arrived quickly. According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye, two officers—one from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and one from the township—engaged in a gunfight with Sanford in the church parking lot. The suspect was shot and killed by police at around 10:33 a.m., approximately eight minutes after the first 911 call.

In total, five fatalities have been confirmed, including the shooter, according to the most recent public reporting. Eight people were wounded, one of whom is reported to be in critical condition, while others are in stable condition.

Explosive devices were also found in or around his vehicle, raising concerns about whether he planned a larger attack. Police are investigating whether those IEDs were used or intended to be used.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as congregants fled for safety. The fire caused portions of the building to be structurally compromised, delaying full searches inside the church ruins.

Public officials have issued responses. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer offered condolences and praised first responders for their swift action.

FBI Director Kash Patel called violence in places of worship “a cowardly and criminal act,” and pledged federal support to local investigators. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement expressing sorrow and gratitude to emergency personnel.

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. No definitive ideological affiliation or target has been publicly confirmed.
