Kanye West Backs Drake in UMG Legal Battle: ‘This Is the Biggest Victory in Music History’

In a surprising turn of events, Kanye West has publicly thrown his support behind Drake in the rapper’s ongoing legal battle against Universal Music Group (UMG). Despite their tumultuous history, West hailed Drake’s lawsuit as “the biggest victory in music history,” signaling a potential shift in the dynamics of the music industry.

The Legal Battle Unfolds

Drake’s lawsuit against UMG centers on allegations of defamation stemming from Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl 2025 halftime performance. The performance featured Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which includes lyrics insinuating Drake is a pedophile. Drake contends that UMG promoted the track to boost profits at his expense, aiming to damage his reputation. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks unspecified damages and has recently been amended to include the Super Bowl performance as evidence of defamation.

Kanye West’s Public Support

On April 17, 2025, Kanye West took to social media to express his support for Drake. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), West stated:

“Yo, I’m so happy right now, you don’t understand. With this UMG, Drake, Kendrick situation, Super Bowl, Grammys — this shit was driving me and you know where it should be driving me, but this is the biggest victory in music history right here.”

He also shared a link to Drake’s amended lawsuit, writing:

“I have to show Drake love for going at the machine. This is a very important moment in music history. For some reason, I felt like I was on Drake’s side concerning this situation. Now here’s over 100 pages to show why.”

A Complicated History

The alliance between West and Drake is notable given their fraught past. Their feud dates back to 2011 and has included public disses, leaked addresses, and competitive album releases. However, they reconciled in late 2021, performing together at the Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert.

Despite this reconciliation, tensions have occasionally resurfaced. West’s recent support for Drake suggests a renewed solidarity, at least concerning their shared grievances with the music industry’s power structures.

Industry Implications

West’s endorsement of Drake’s legal action against UMG underscores a growing movement among artists challenging traditional industry practices. West himself has previously criticized record labels for restrictive contracts and lack of transparency.

By supporting Drake, West amplifies the conversation about artist rights and the influence of major record labels. This public backing may encourage other artists to scrutinize their relationships with industry giants and advocate for greater autonomy.

Social Media Reactions

Fans and industry observers have taken to social media to discuss West’s support for Drake. On Facebook, a post by HipHopFreakzz highlighted West’s statement, prompting discussions about the potential impact on the music industry.

On Instagram, DJ Akademiks shared a video of West’s remarks, further fueling conversations about the evolving dynamics between artists and record labels.

Kanye West’s public support for Drake in his legal battle against UMG marks a significant moment in the ongoing discourse about artist rights and industry practices. As the lawsuit progresses, the music world watches closely, recognizing that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for the relationship between artists and record labels.
