Republican Senator Mitch McConnell briefly fell to the ground on Tuesday in the Russell Senate Office Building basement after being approached by a reporter with a question about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to witnesses, McConnell was walking toward an elevator when a reporter asked,
“Do you support ICE taking working people off the streets and kidnapping them?”
Moments later, the 83-year-old senator appeared to trip and fell to the floor, prompting aides and nearby staffers to rush to his side.
He was helped back to his feet and appeared unharmed. McConnell smiled, waved to the camera, and continued walking down the hallway.
A spokesperson for McConnell’s office later confirmed the incident, saying the senator “is fine and resumed his schedule immediately.”
The minor fall comes as McConnell continues his duties in the Senate, following past reports of health concerns earlier in his career. No medical attention was required, officials said.
